At the foundation of all of our projects is the idea to manipulate and play with materials in order to arrive at interesting and functional products. In the case of the “Pinch” sofa system was the idea of finding an innovative way of combining expanded polyurethane and tubular steel – two materials very commonly found in sofas.
The starting point was to combine two materials that have very different characteristics - Foam changes shape when touched, bent, under pressure, etc., and steel pipes tend to be very strong and hard.
The Pinch seating system is characterized by steel tube legs that run all the way to the top. This in turn makes the upholstered cushions look as if they have been wedged into place and gives the sofa shape. The main concept is to make the fluid steel structure interact with the upholstered parts in a visible way.
One of the goals was to propose a sofa system that had interesting details when looking at it from all angles (front, back, side, etc.).
